You learn something new everyday Spring has come with a venegance up here, everything is on the move fast now, in fact most things are three weeks early. The wallflowers are in full flower, so is the honesty, grass is growing like a weed and the bindweed has once again started it's annual march in the borders. It doesn't seem to matter how much of the stuff I dig up, how much I paint it with weedkiller, the wretched stuff still comes back, it honestly reminds me of that film I once saw when every 15 years or so Soldier ants went on the march destroying everything in their path, the only thing that 'stopped' them was fire. The bindweed in this garden is like that, you can stop it with a flame gun designed for gardens and the next year it reappears waving it's lethal, strangling stems as much as to say"Cooo-eeee, have you missed me? Not to worry, here I am". I used to tear my hair out over it and get all upset, but not any more, I've found it bothers me a lot less to treat like any other weed that needs to be kept on top of instead of thinking that it is personal. After all, the gardening experts ASSURE me, that while it may BEHAVE like a triffid it most certainly is NOT, and they should know, they've even found it's roots at the bottom of a 70 foot well, so I think the concensuss of opinion is that when you've got, it's here to stay, learn to live with each other. With the recent warm weather the butterflies have been out in force, Orange tips, Red Admirals and the biggest Peacock Butterflies you have ever seen, no kidding, they are HUGE, almost twice the size I am used to seeing, same with the bees and Hoverflies, this can only be due to the mild winter we have had and the Ladybirds are everywhere, even crawling across the lawns which is very unusual. Also the plants seem to behaving just like they did last year, racing away into growth and coming into flower early, which means that if it does follow last year's pattern there will be another flush of growth and flowers in early Autumn, well we shall see. ![]()
